The SDF at Deir Ezzor arrive at Al-Shajil and force Isis to close themselves inside. The Islamic State tries to counterattack Operation Round Up, but in vain
The SDF in the south of Deir Ezzor reach Al-Shajil, attacking Isis along two axes: west and south. The forces of Operation Round Up (Jazeera Storm) are at a kilometer from the residential area and are advancing against the militiamen of the Islamic State, who retreated inside. They did so by using the tunnels and mined fields, which contributed to slow down the offensive and protecting the lives of civilian fugitives. The Daesh militiamen attempted to counterattack in the whole area, but were rejected by the Arab-Kurdish troops, which continued till they reached the gates of the city. These, however, liberated from the jihadists 10 villages, while the bomb squads were clearing the territory from mines in order to create a safe passage corridor. Also the International Coalition is participating in the maneuvers with aircrafts, which in the last hours launched a dozen raids against the quadrant.
Meanwhile the International Coalition targets the Daesh commanders fleeing from the south of Deir Ezzor. Mass defections increase as the maneuvers progress
In the meantime, Inherent Resolve is continuing to target Isis commanders escaping from the south of Deir Ezzor. Four elements of the Islamic State, most probably prominent figures of the terrorist group were killed in an air raid of the Coalition. The International air fighters destroyed the vehicle in which these were traveling outside Sha’fah. The escalation of Operation Round Up caused an increase of mass escapes in the ranks of Daesh at all levels. From single militiamen to their chiefs. Part of these surrender to the SDF and part try to leave the area in the dark, to go towards the Iraqi border. Even more so since their other pocket of resistance, the one between Homs and Deir Ezzor in the Badia desert, is being attacked by the Syrian army (SAA). And therefore it is no longer safe.
