New SAA-Russia operation against the Islamic State in the desert to the east. The maneuvers are the response to the former ISIS attacks in al-Soukhna. This strategy, however, has so far not brought the desired results
New maxi operation by the Syrian army (SAA), in cooperation with Russia, against the Islamic State in the Badia al-Sham desert. The maneuvers began with strikes by Moscow fighters on the network of caves, used by jihadists to hide and store weapons. Subsequently, SAA troops came into play and initiated a major roundup in the newly hit areas. The attacks are the response to the latest ambushes by ex-ISIS militiamen in the al-Soukhna quadrant, which caused the wounding of 15 soldiers. Shortly before, however, IS had targeted military posts and checkpoints. This strategy, at least so far, doesn’t seem to have worked. The fundamentalists, in fact, as soon as the enemy offensives are over, resume hitting the army and the allied militias and then disappear into the desert.
