AtlasVPN cybersecurity experts: EU GDPR fines skyrocketed to over 1 billion euros in 2021. The most hit companies are Amazon (€746 million) and WhatsApp (€225 million). The worst countries are Spain, Italy and Romania

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) fines skyrocketed to over 1 billion euros in 2021. It has been denounced by AtlasVPN cybersecurity experts in a report. According the document, last year there have been 412 penalties issued. In addition, companies like Amazon and WhatsApp had to pay off the most significant ones for violating the Regulation. The first company (Amazon Europe Core S.à.r.l) incurred the highest fine of €746 million. The second one, WhatsApp Ireland Ltd., was fined by €225 million. On the countries side, Spain is the most hit one, accumulating 351 penalties, resulting in €36.7 million worth of penalties since 2018. Italy stands second on the list with 101 fines, which required businesses to pay nearly €90 million. The third one is Romania with 68 fines and a total of €720,950.
