Cybercrime, credentials of around 500 million WhatsApp users are exposed

Credentials of around 500 million WhatsApp users are exposed. Check Point cybersecurity experts: The leaked database is a re-use of an older 2019 Facebook leak, but it’s still dangerous for vishing and smishing

Credentials of around 500 million WhatsApp users are exposed on Darkweb. Check Point cybersecurity experts denounce it. The dataset allegedly contains WhatsApp user data from 84 countries. Cybercrime actors claim there are over 32 million US user records, 45 million phone numbers from Egypt, 35 million from Italy, 29 million from Saudi Arabia, 20 million from France and Turkey. UK phone numbers are more that 11 million and Russian nearly 10 million. The full list went on sale for 4 days, and is now being distributed freely amongst Dark Web users. However, there is evidence that the leaked database is actually a re-use of an older 2019 Facebook leak. The db, despite being “old”, is still very dangerous. Especially for vishing or smishing campains, further “weaponized” as Christmas is approaching. So, users have to be aware of links and unknown senders/callers, while using any messaging services, not only WhatsApp.
